Caterpillar has over 35 years of experience burning hydrogen in generator sets. Cat® engines sold today can run on 5 to 10% hydrogen mixtures. Some customized projects have more than 200,000 operating hours running on up to 60% hydrogen blend.
Caterpillar has a deep performance simulation experience, especially on combustion and flame propagation, gained through research on alternative fuels like hydrogen mixtures and 100% hydrogen in reciprocating engines. Testing is currently being performed on single- and multi-cylinder configurations of the CG132, CG170, CG260, G3500, and G3600 A4 platforms.
