Caterpillar Releases the CS44 and CP44 Vibratory Soil Compactors

Caterpillar Inc. announces the introduction of the CS44 and CP44 vibratory soil compactors. The new CS44 and CP44 offer many of the same industry-proven design and performance characteristics of the successful 400E-Series Soil Compactors as well as the Production-Class range. In addition, the CS44 and CP44 feature design enhancements that increase machine serviceability, reliability and operator comfort when compared to the current 400E-Series Vibratory Soil Compactors.

Caterpillar Introduces the 2.2 m Cutting Rotor Option for the PM200 Cold Planer.

Caterpillar Inc. is pleased to announce the availability of the PM200 Cold Planer with an optional 2.2 m cutting rotor. Customers now have two cutting width options when purchasing the PM200: the standard 2.0 m rotor or the new 2.20 m rotor option. The new 2.20 m rotor option provides greater efficiency and productivity by reducing passes during applications that benefit from a wider cutting rotor, such as mainline, high productivity milling. Fewer passes will contribute to a reduction in fuel burn. The standard 2.0 m rotor provides greater versatility for urban applications and milling tasks that require a high degree of maneuverability and precision.

New Features Make the Cat® 973D Track Loader More Powerful, Productive and Fuel - Efficient — Plus Easier to Operate.

Completing the Cat® D-Series Track Loader lineup is the new 973D, featuring load-sensing hydraulics, joystick steering, new operator's station (with tilting cab) and 10 percent more power than its 973C predecessor. The new loader carries on the 973C's "all-purpose performer" reputation and retains much of its solid design, including the Cat C9 engine, hydrostatic drive, single-fabrication mainframe, Z-bar loader linkage and oscillating undercarriage. The 973D is a "one-machine workforce" with the features to take on the toughest jobs—at construction sites or in the harsh environments of steel mills, landfills, quarries and demolition sites.

Medium Wheel Loaders — Foundation of the Cat® Wheel Loader Range for 50 Years.

In December of 1959, the first production Cat wheel loader was driven off the assembly line at the Caterpillar plant in Aurora, IL - the 944 Wheel Traxcavator. The 944, fitted with a 2-cubic yard (1.5-m³) bucket and available with either a 105-horsepower (78 kW) gas or diesel engine, was the culmination of a seven-year development effort—and the beginning of Caterpillar's leadership in the worldwide market for mid-size wheel loaders. Caterpillar's 50-year dominance in this market segment has hinged, simply, on customers recognizing the inherent value of the Cat Wheel Loader—its fundamental reliability and durability, coupled with exceptionally strong parts and service support.

The first Cat Rental Store opens in Western Africa.

Following a year of preparation and staff training, Western Africa's first branded Cat Rental Store is now up and running in Burkina Faso. Opened last May in the nation's capital Ouagadougou, it's the latest development in over 11 years of rental activity in the country by the local Cat dealer Burkina Equipements. The new store rents wheel loaders, hydraulic excavators, track-type tractors, motor graders, compactors and allied equipment locally, as well as to mining operations located up to 450 kilometers away. 'The idea of opening a Cat Rental Store is a natural and logical continuation of rental activities we have had since 1998. During the past years we have learnt to manage the rental business in demanding conditions; our partners and customers have also had to learn to trust us. The machine fleet has evolved and grown over the years consisting today of approximately hundred machines,' explains Bernard Ballion, the director of Burkina Equipements.

Mountain Makeover

It is 100 metres tall and weighs more than six million tonnes. It is composed of coal ash and waste from the nearby power station, and it is still burning inside. "It's not very pretty," says Ines Llerena Gil, the town's municipal architect. "But it has become part of our little town and we're rather fond of it." The 'Terri', as it is affectionately called, is a huge slagheap that has piled up over more than 100 years of open cast coal mining and electricity generation. It lies just outside the town of Puertollano, in central Spain. And since the country's main high-speed railway line runs past it, more than 50,000 people see it everyday. It has become quite a landmark, one that everyone associates with Puertollano.

In June this year the Guglielmo Marconi Airport, Bologna was awarded "ACI Europe Best Airport Award 2009" in the category for airports handling from one to five million passengers. The latest report of the ICCSAI on competition in European air transport ranked the Bologna airport as fourth in Italy for international connectivity. This was an improvement of 12 places on the previous year’s rating in this world-wide classification. The award and the excellent ICCSAI rating are recognition primarily of the strategies adopted by the airport authority regarding passenger services, commercial activity and attention to the environment and safety.

New Caterpillar® TH417 Telehandler Offers Enhanced Performance, Versatility and Serviceability

The Cat® TH417 Telehandler features a number of new systems and designs to enhance performance, promote operator efficiency and machine productivity, expand versatility and keep service time and costs to a minimum. Machine has a rated load capacity of 4000 kilograms, delivers 17-meters of lift height and is powered by a Cat C4.4 turbocharged, after- cooled, mechanically controlled diesel engine producing 74.5 kilowatt of power. The power train also features a limited slip differential fitted in the front axle. The system enables the telehandler to work in difficult underfoot conditions, and it engages automatically so that the operator can focus on getting work done. The 4-speed powersynchro transmission and torque converter drive system ensures long, trouble-free life in tough applications.

CAT® D7E WITH ELECTRIC DRIVE

UNBELIEVABLE Conventional wisdom said there was no way one machine could deliver powerful dozing and precise maneuverability.... all while using considerably less fuel. This is the Cat D7E- A dozer that, as conventional wisdom once said, simply could not be biult...UNTIL NOW. When oil prices and environmental concerns started ratcheting up the cost of diesel fuel in 2006, many equipment manufactures tasked their engineers to explore the possibilities of alternative power sources. At Caterpillar, however, the solution was already under development-the D7E-a top secret, all electric-drive, track-type tractor with almost a decade of development behind it. And unlike some new product initiatives that have to struggle for attention and resources, the D7E was green flagged by the top executives at Caterpillar from the get-go.

In discovering the origins of the world famous Lesotho Promise, a 603 carat gemstone of remarkable quality, visitors to Lesotho’s Letšeng Diamond Mine have to travel steep winding roads surpassing 3 200m before reaching their destination. On arrival, the view is majestic, with sweeping vistas of snow capped peaks in all directions bearing testimony to this remarkable geological find, first discovered in 1957.

Recycling waste wood into energy

Surprisingly to most people, using waste wood to fire a power station is extremely environment-friendly. First of all it’s a renewable resource, it’s also a by-product that would not be used otherwise and best of all it is completely CO2neutral. Tegra, a Swiss energy company uses it to produce 350,000 megawatt hours of energy annually. For their ground-breaking initiative, they won Switzerland’s prestigious Watt d’Or award. Cat® machines are part of the success-story. Tegra was founded in 2004 and already two years later the first boiler of their wood-waste-fired steam-electric generating station went online. In 2008 a third one started to produce energy.

Going underground to reduce pollution

It’s seven o’clock in the morning and the teams are already at work blasting, loading and moving up to 100 tonnes of rock every hour – that’s the target to get the tunnel open on time. It’s a familiar routine: blast-crush-move. And to help ensure that all goes according to plan they’re using a fleet of Cat machines 18 hours a day, seven days a week. Meanwhile on the surface, another routine is unfolding. A routine that’s all-too-familiar to the hundreds of thousands of people who use the main highway between Pretoria and Johannesburg in South Africa. “If I’m lucky,” says Peter Dietz, a regular commuter, “I’ll be in Joburg by nine o’clock - even though it’s only a short distance it will take me two hours to cover less than 50 kilometres. And if there are any broken-down vehicles on the way, it could take me up to four hours.”

The robust belly guards have a smoother profile, have greater coverage and provide easier access than previous designs. The smoother profile created by the new guards reduces drag and enhances compaction as it does not get caught up in trash or other waste debris. Additionally, wear is reduced on the underside of the compactor. New sealing strips close openings where the belly guards and the machine meet and greatly reduce trash entry. Engineered guard joints further minimize trash entry.

Caterpillar’s 623G elevating scraper reduces cost per tonne for Polish contractor.

Independent loading capability, high travel speeds and the ability to spread material on the move, make Caterpillar self-loading elevating wheel tractor scrapers highly productive machines. In the right conditions, the elevating scraper will consistently deliver maximum productivity and a low cost per tonne. Polish contractor Budownictwo Drogowe Budar is an established earthmoving and construction firm with a fleet of more than 74 machines. As with most contractors in Poland, Budar has mainly relied on articulated dump trucks (ADT) and hydraulic excavators for earthmoving productivity on site.

Melbourne winters are known as some of the coldest of all state capital cities on Australia’s mainland. Cat® Cold Planer Duo Ensures a Smooth Landing.

Gmmco, India’s largest Cat® dealer, recently sealed the deal on a second Cat cold planer sale—a new PM200—to contractor Ashwini Infra Developments Pvt. Ltd. (A.I.D.). The delivery represents the first PM200 to India. Ashwini Infra Developments was hired to carry out the milling and asphalting of a secondary runway reconstruction project at the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport in Mumbai, India’s largest airport. The runways required upgrading to international standards in order to handle the larger Airbus A380s, and secondary runways needed further strengthening and are being extended as well. The contractor selected the larger Cat PM200 in part for its reliability, as the project required adherence to a very rigorous timeline. The crews are only able to complete the project during overnight hours and that "required tight planning and firm schedules. Any breakdown would result in the complete abandonment of plans."

Caterpillar Moves Forward with New Large Mining Trucks.

Caterpillar is moving rapidly forward with the new large mining trucks showcased at MINExpo last year and representing the company’s largest investment ever in new mining technology. The Cat® 793F and 797F mechanical drive trucks and the 795F AC electric drive truck are all achieving milestones. The 793F and the 797F have accumulated more than 75,000 hours of field testing and have proven their performance capabilities and their durability. The new Cat C175 engine that powers them has racked up 130,000 hours of field testing in mining trucks and more than 120,000 hours in power systems. Because of the success of these field-follow programs, the 793F is targeted to go into full production within a few months and the 797F late this year.

Cat® 328D LCR with tunnel boom boosts productivity on Swiss road project.

A dedicated tunnel construction version of the Caterpillar® 328D LCR compact radius excavator is proving highly productive on the A9 Autoroute construction project near Visp, in Switzerland. The first machine of its kind to operate on a Swiss contract, the 328D LCR uses a special dedicated front attachment designed and constructed by German Caterpillar dealer Zeppelin. The machine offers a powerful, stable yet compact solution for tunnelling contractors. With a rear overhang of just 305mm, providing a tail swing radius of just 1,900mm, the 328D LCR is ideal for the restricted working area within a tunnel construction site. The machine is equipped with the wide tracks from the 330D L conventional crawler excavator, ensuring maximum stability when operating.

The former province of Béarn in southwestern France is tucked away on the eastern side of the Pyrénées-Atlantiques, and is steeped in history. Its strategic location controls access to easy passage into the Pyrénées Mountains. It is said that during the Napoleonic wars, Wellington’s army passed through “the Béarn,” where they won an important battle at Orthez and set up a garrison at Pau on their way to Spain. It is also said that the capital city of Pau is the site of Europe’s first continental golf course (laid out in the mid-1850s). Even now, you can still play a round of golf on its historic links.

Caterpillar® AccuGrade saves time and money in Slovenia.

Primorje d.d., Slovenia’s largest general construction group, operates 35 Cat machines and undertakes major projects both in Slovenia and throughout Central Europe. Last year, needing to grade and pave an artificial lake under construction in the north-east of the country, Primorje turned to the local Cat® dealer Teknox Group for the most cost-effective solution. Avce Pumped-Storage Hydroelectric Powerplant consists of a two million cubic metre storage lake, connected via a two kilometre-long pipeline to a power station 550 metres below, alongside the Soce river. Water is pumped up to the lake at night when electricity prices are low and flows down to the power station’s turbine to generate electricity at times of peak demand.

650 Kilometres of Goby Desert with Cat® 785C Mining Trucks.

Early March, two giant Cat 785C mining trucks reached the boarder of Mongolia after having travelled through the United States, Pacific Ocean and China. This journey of thousands of kilometres has little of an exception. It was the last 650 kilometres that made the delivery of these trucks to the Ukhaakhudag coal mining project site near Tavan Tolgoi in Mongolia so special: driving across the wilds of Goby desert.

Moving the earth for millions of prawns.

In the scorching heat of the Saudi Arabian desert, more than 100 Cat® machines are moving 20,000 cubic meters of sand every day to build the world’s largest fully-integrated Aquaculture project. The prawn farm run by Saudi Arabia’s National Prawn Company (NPC) produces 50 tons of prawns daily in a remarkably environmental-friendly way.

The European Federation of Management Development (EFMD) in Brussels has granted EFMD CEL (accreditation for Technology Enhanced Learning) to the Sales Effectiveness Process at Caterpillar University. After L’Oréal and Volkswagen, Caterpillar University is only the third corporate university to receive this accreditation usually granted to public universities and business schools.

The machine, currently exhibited at Intermat construction trade show in Paris, France, from 20 to 25 April 2009, was designed and prepared for demolition purposes by the French Caterpillar dealer Bergerat Monnoyeur.

New compact radius 14-tonne excavator helps improve safety, versatility and reliability.

In a move to help small-to-medium construction companies improve safety and increase productivity, Caterpillar will be showing its latest small hydraulic excavator – the Cat 314D L CR – at this year’s Intermat, 20-25 April 2009, in Paris. The new 314D features a compact radius, making it ideal for work in urban construction sites where often space is restricted is densely packed with machines, equipment and people. The 314D’s reduced tail swing is expected to improve overall safety, while the new tool control system enables machines to be very quickly adjusted to a wide variety of jobs.

In the Kuwait Cricket T-20 Classic League the match between Al-Bahar and Agility was held on February 7, 2009 at Sulaibiya Ground, the Al-Bahar Team scored 175 runs with seven wickets in 20 overs. In return, the Agility team was all out for 145 runs in the 19th over. The Al-Bahar Team won the match beating Agility by 30 runs. There are good chances of Al-Bahar Team to reach Semi-finals in both 40 Over's League and T-20 Classic League Tournaments.

The Cat® D11T Track-Type Tractor delivers reliable performance, long life and lowest-cost-per-ton production in mining and other high-volume dozing applications. The new machine also is offered in an optional CarryDozer configuration (D11T CD) to maximize productivity when moving large loads over long distances or up steep slopes. Both the D11T and D11T CD offer enhancements for the operator—such as a hydraulically actuated access ladder and a two-camera Work Area Vision System (WAVS).
